3 Minute Temptation-Buster

I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another comforter. - John14:16

In his great book, Spiritual Breakthroughs, Bruce Wilkinson writes: "Imade a dramatic breakthrough when I discovered that right before every temptation, my emotions were distressed (inwardly agitated) and that I was actually seeking for comfort. That's when I remembered the promise,
'I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that hemay abide with you for ever' (Jn 14:14-17).
"Incredibly, Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit to be our ever-present source of comfort. I wondered what would happen if I specifically asked Him to comfort me in the time of temptation."

I decided to try.

I prayed:
'Dear Holy Spirit, I'm in desperate need of you. I don't want to sin - please comfort me now.'

At first nothing happened.
How discouraged I felt.
But then I slowly became aware ofsomething - I felt comforted.
I didn't know exactly when I was comforted,I only knew that I was - that my soul felt soothed and no longer in pain. When I turned back toward the temptation, it had miraculously slithered back into the darkness, far away from my senses. I was free.

"I've prayed to my Comforter many times since, and I've discovered two indisputable truths:
(1) The Holy Spirit always - and I mean always -completes His responsibility in my heart.
(2) He always gives me Hiscomfort within 3 minutes, though I can never put my finger on the momentwhen He does.

I call this prayer for comfort, my "3-minute temptation-buster."

Thanks for that Bruce.
We also covered this powerful truth during the 31 Days of Favour campaign we did in Feb 2008.

Why don't you try it!

Fireproof - the Movie

I will be showing this movie trailer on Sunday AM during the message.
I am looking forward to seeing this movie in Oz in 2009 - and know that it will bring hope to many people.

FIREPROOF is the story of a successful, well-respected Georgia fire captain whose marriage does not enjoy the same success. Caleb and his wife cannot seem to stop arguing unless they occupy different rooms.
With divorce threatening and his motivation waning, Caleb seeks advice from his father, who’s newly birthed faith in Christ leads him to offer Caleb a Love Dare. As Caleb works through The Love Dare devotionals, Christ begins to change Caleb and his marriage from the inside out, giving hope that perhaps his marriage can be "reborn" as well.

Check out the movie website here.

Prayer... "giddy up!"

“… they were all together in one place …suddenly ……they saw …..all of them ….when they heard ….. a crowd came together …. utterly amazed….amazed and perplexed… “
Acts 2:1-12 (NIV)

Something happens when we all get together to pray.

See you this Sunday night at 6pm - for an hour. Giddy up!!

Sex ....for Husbands and Wives .. "yes please!"

I have done a previous post on Perry Noble. A bunch of us heard him recently in Sydney.

He was inspiring... again. I have been tracking him awhile now. And he is a great communicator.

He has been doing some great blog posts recently about relationships and sex in marriage. His posts are here, here, here and here.

To help understand some of my message this Sunday AM these posts are well worth checking out. I you can't click the links above, here is the text of the posts cut n paste below.

Husbands…Want To Have More Sex With Your Wife?

Sex is on everyone’s mind…ESPECIALLY if you are a man! UNFORTUNATELY…the church hasn’t had the stones to address the issue…thus resulting in a lot of confusion and false teaching about the subject.

One of the things that people seem to forget was that sex was God’s idea! He created it to be enjoyed frequently and to be viewed as special between a HUSBAND and HIS WIFE!
(There IS an entire book of the Bible dedicated to the subject of sex!!! Song of Solomon!)

However, the world has taken it and ran with its own ideas…and so in today’s society, when it comes to sex…people have a “whatever” attitude!

Recently, my friend Ed Young challenged the married couples in the congregation at Fellowship Church to have sex for seven days in a row! (Their church membership increased 1,293 %–just kidding!)
I thought that was an incredible idea. I love what he said about regular and intimate sex between a husband and a wife is the best way for a couple to combat sexual temptation in a marriage.

BUT…I started thinking…what happens when the seven days are over?
SO…I sat down and made up a list of five things I really believe a husband can do in order to have a consistent, healthy, vibrant and exciting sex life WITHIN marriage!
And I will post about it…tomorrow! :-)

Five Ways Husbands Can Have More Sex With Their Wives

Here we go! :-)

#1 - Serve Her!!!
The Apostle Paul tells us in
Ephesians 5:25 to love our wives as Jesus loves the church! He modeled this love in John 13:1-5 in one of the most powerful examples of servanthood in the Scriptures!
Unfortunately, too many times we as husbands make the sexual experience all about us “being served” and not about doing all that we can to “give ourselves up” for our wife by placing her needs as a priority in our lives.
I had a friend once who, on honeymoon night, took his wife by the hand and led her into the bedroom…where he had a bowl of water and a towel. He got down on his knees and said, “Scripture tells me to love you like Jesus loves the church. He modeled that love for us in the Gospel of John when He washed the feet of the disciples. I want to make it my goal in life to put your needs before mine, to serve you as best as I can. And so right now, before anything else takes place tonight, I want to wash your feet as an example of how I plan on serving you for the rest of my life!” DANG!!!

#2 - Talk To Her
When we get home after a long day…we should talk TO HER! All too often we sum up our day in 30 seconds or less, then sit on the couch, expect her to have dinner ready, expect her to get the kids ready for bed…and then expect her to be “ready” in “30 seconds or less!”
BUT…one of the things that I am continually discovering is that my wife wants to have an emotional connection with me…and a lot of that happens as a result of me talking to her, telling her about my day…and including the details of things that take place.
I used to be HORRIBLE at this! I didn’t realize it until we were in a group one time and people were saying things to her like, “Hey ‘Cretia, did Perry tell you about (BLANK),” and she would look at me and say, “No, I guess he hasn’t had time yet.”
Truth is…I didn’t MAKE the time to communicate with her, to tell her the details of my day…thus she didn’t feel as close to me.
So now…I MAKE IT a priority! I don’t want her finding out about my day through other people…I want her to KNOW she’s important…and the formula I’ve discovered is DETAILS = IMPORTANT!

#3 - Listen To Her!!!
I once heard that the average man uses 5,000 words per day…and the average woman uses 10,000 with gusts up to 15,000!!! Men, they use twice as many words!!! Do you know why?
DETAILS = IMPORTANT!
When they are talking they want to communicate EVERYTHING to us…not because they want to bore us to death, but because they want us to FEEL like they FEEL!
SO…that means we can’t tell them, “Talk to me during the commercials please!” That is NOT romantic!
We can’t sit there and zone out of the conversation with her and proceed to watch the movie on television we’ve seen 100 times and then think we’ve had “intimate” conversation! Just doesn’t work!
We can’t ask them, “Does this story have an ending? Can we get there please?”
“Well Perry,” you say, “it’s hard to be patient when she’s going on and on!”
I am quite sure God has felt the same way about us at times when we are talking to Him!
We’ve GOT to make time for the details!

#4 - Spoil Her!!!
When was the last time you did something “over the top” for your wife…with NO STRINGS ATTACHED?
When was the last time you gave her a foot rub…and didn’t expect a “favor” in return?
When was the last time you let her sleep late and handled the responsibility of the kids all by yourself?
When was the last time you have her a backrub…with NO STRINGS ATTACHED?
Here’s the deal…if you are doing something “for her” with “selfish motivations,” SHE KNOWS! SHE’S SMART!
BUT…if we as husbands make it our PRIORITY to absolutely SPOIL our wives…that will naturally overflow into them wanting to spoil us!!! We’ve GOT to take the lead on this!!!

#5 - Treasure Her!!!
We can’t make the sexual experience ALL ABOUT US! We can’t reduce her to a sex object. We can’t ONLY show her attention when “we want it!”
It is our responsibility before God to VALUE her, to TREASURE her, to see her as a daughter of THE MOST HIGH GOD!
Does your wife feel TREASURED? (Ask her!)
Let me make you a promise…a wifes perceived value will most likely be determined by how much undivided attention she receives from YOU!!!
That means no freakin’ cell phone when you two are on a date!
Heck, that means actually getting a babysitter and GOING on a date!
Here’s a question to ask her (which will require you to listen to her answer!) What are some things that I do that make you feel valued and treasured? And…after you ask this question…SHUT UP AND LISTEN! Your wife has WAY MORE INSIGHT about what she needs than ANYONE else on the planet!
Whew…those are five things that I believe will help some of us guys out! Enjoy! :-)

Three Ways Wives Can Have More Sex With Their Husbands
To be fair…I thought I should blog about the other aspect of this relationship/sex thing…here goes…

#1 - Check and see if he is awake!
#2 - If he is…simply tell him you would like to have sex.
#3 - If he isn’t just whisper the word “sex!” He will immediately wake up…when he does just tell him you would like to have sex.
That’s it!

Thanks for all that Perry!!!

Over to you - what do you think?

Preparing - Please Pray

I am finalising my message for this Sunday morning - Avoiding Having An Affair.
It has been months in the making.... and I want to get it right. Really right!

The bible talks a lot about sex ... sex is awesome. But I need some help with this message prep.

Please pray!

Schoolies, Toolies, Foolies and Moolies

Jillian is supporting the army of Schoolies Week volunteers this week by coordinating the nightly catering. What a job!!!

She and her friend Kerryn are "moolies" - mothers at schoolies.

Here is how the Courier Mail are reporting on the week. And below is a video clip they have developed with interviews with schoolies.

And it good to see by old friend Andy Gourlay in the news there again. Here is what the ABC writes:

Volunteers from the Hotel Chaplaincy Group are again offering their support but spokesman Andy Gourlay says they do not just operate in Surfers Paradise.
"We've been doing this for about 11 years now and we have 1,800 volunteers in around 17 locations around Australia looking after 75,000 schoolies.

Here is the rest of the article.

I'll have to find the photo of me in my Hotel Chaplaincy shirt in 1998 and 1999. Watch this space.

Apprenticeship

I mentioned in my John Mellencamp post that the theme for me on the night was “apprenticeship.”

There were 3 performers - John Mellencamp, Sheryl Crow and Shane Nicholson.

Shane was “new talent” and was given the opportunity to “have a go” and shine. His mum was in the crowd – and she loved it. Shane used the opportunity to quickly mention another new act visiting in Jan 2009.

Sheryl mentioned that she had previously visited Brisbane as a singer with a Michael Jackson tour. And she sung a Crowded House number because she was a support act for them in USA. And she played a Paul Hester song because of that performing relationship.

John Mellencamp then got Sheryl to sing a duet with him during his set. And Mellencamp worked his band hard – and they moved into the “front row” position on cue, and then retreated.

At the encore, Mellencamp introduced his 13 year old son who did some great guitar work.

The night for me was about opportunities for new talent.

I saw the journey of a background singer to lead singer

I saw an example of a support act being involved in a main act.
I saw the journey of a support act becoming the main act.…and I saw artists acknowledge “their path” by honouring their “stepping stones”

This had me thinking a lot about apprenticeship – and how we grow – in both our character and our leadership.

Here is an excerpt from the introduction to the book of Philippians in The Message:

None of the qualities of the Christian life can be learned out of a book. Something more like apprenticeship is required, being around someone who out of years of devoted discipline shows us, by his or her entire behaviour, what it is. Moments of verbal instruction will certainly occur, but mostly an apprentice acquires skill by daily and intimate association with a "master," picking up subtle but absolutely essential things, such as timing and rhythm and "touch."

Here are some inspiring bible verses

You've been a good apprentice to me, a part of my teaching, my manner of life, direction, faith, steadiness, love, patience, troubles, sufferings—suffering along with me in all the grief I had to put up with in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. And you also well know that God rescued me! 2 Timothy 3:10-11 (MSG)

He quoted a proverb: " 'Can a blind man guide a blind man?' Wouldn't they both end up in the ditch? An apprentice doesn't lecture the master. The point is to be careful who you follow as your teacher. Luke 6:39-40 (MSG)

Give a cool cup of water to someone who is thirsty, for instance. The smallest act of giving or receiving makes you a true apprentice. You won't lose out on a thing." Matthew 10:42 (MSG)

Hold fast and follow the pattern of wholesome and sound teaching which you have heard from me, in [all] the faith and love which are [for us] in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 1:13 (AMP)

I don't write these things merely to make you feel uncomfortable, but that you may realise facts, as my dear children. After all, you may have had ten thousand teachers in Christian faith, but you cannot have many fathers! For in Jesus Christ I am your spiritual father through the Gospel; that is why I implore you to follow the footsteps of me your father. I have sent Timothy to you to help you in this. For he himself is my much-loved and faithful son in the Lord, and he will remind you of those ways of living in Christ which I teach in every church to which I go. 1 Corinthians 4:14 (Phillips)

The master may get better work from an untrained apprentice than from a skilled rebel! Proverbs 26:10 (TLB)

God, help me to be a great apprentice to You!

PS – this will no doubt lead me to another post on “building apostolically.” And some references to the ministry of Steve Dixon.

John Mellencamp Concert

I had an awesome night last night at the John Mellencamp concert. Nick shouted me a ticket for my birthday - wow!!

Here are some pretty lame pictures from my HTC Dual phone - but who cares - I was there!!

Casey Chamber's husband, Shane Nicholson, was the opening act, followed by Sheryl Crow.
Mellencamp is a master - and he sure knows how to work a crowd. The music was tight and professional - and the energy coming off the stage was powerful. The lights and backdrops worked a treat - so we'll have to advance that in 2009!

The theme for me for the night was Apprenticeship. You can read about it more in this post here.
Mellencamp was recently in Adelaide. He has a private jet... but Sheryl Crow does not. Check out his Adelaide Now article titled, "No luxury as the Sheryl Crow flies."
Here is how Adelaide Now wrote about that concert - "Mellencamp rock still hurts so good."

PS - He did not sing the hit - "Hurt So Good." Probably the only disappointment of the night.

Win-win for President-elect as He Hands Clinton a Golden Straitjacket

This article and analysis from Andrew Sullivan in The Australian - November 24, 2008 was a great read.
Here is a start....

THE Obamaites remember the chaotic amateurism of the Bill Clinton transition in 1993. From the look of it so far, the Obama transition is as smooth and professional as the running of the campaign - and one of the swiftest jump-starts in recent American political history.
Only the Reagan transition went so quickly.

What of the content? The biggest shock, of course, is the tapping of Hillary Clinton for secretary of state. I say shock because no one expected it, including Her Imperial Highness of Appalachia. But the more you think about it, the less surprising it is. Clinton remains the biggest domestic threat to the Obama presidency. The Republicans, decimated by the feckless campaign of John McCain and the malign incompetence of Karl Rove, have become a toothless, bitter rump.

The Clintons, however, retain a following ....... click here to read the rest.

Here is my question - is this political acumen or self-protection?

Time will tell, I am sure.
See you in 2016.

"The Howard Years" - Insightful

I did a post recently about the current ABC TV series "The Howard Years"

Have I told you that I am really enjoying it?!
It has been described as "Candid, Confessional, Controversial."
As each edition unfolds I can't believe how much I have forgotten since 1996.
There is a great timeline on the ABC website.
You can even download a PDF chronology of The Howard Years here.
I'll be setting the HDD recorder again for part 3 - next Monday 8.30pm.
Candid, Confessional, Controversial

Here is a sample:

Obedience is the Kingdom Currency

I really was inspired by something Gavin said in the drama dialogue yesterday morning (as part of the Super 6 - part 4 message)...
"Obedience is the currency of the Kingdom"

And then I had a powerful God-wonder moment during this video clip song "My Soul in Your Hands" from Natalie Grant.
(We used to call it a "wobbly" Westlife moment.)

Some of the lyrics are below.

No eyes have seen
No ears have heard
What God has prepared for all those
Who leave their own will behind
To follow His

(chorus)
So I surrender to you
I give to You everything
Show me what to do
And I will give to you
All that I am
Placing my soul in Your hands

etc etc

I think these phrases really hammered me - "...who leave their own will behind to follow His.."

Check out this post about the part 4 message - "I Will Obey God Today."

Iron People (part 2)

I saw this group of sculptures today in a shop with the kids.

They are people and robots made from iron bolts, nuts and bits n pieces.

Made me think of the previous post I did about Iron People.
Same name, but not the same thing!!

Paying Your Bill - An "Iron People" Example

I have been making some notes recently here about Iron People - people who "sharpen my mind."

Check out this great blog post from Tracy called Paying Your Bill.

Here is a teaser.

While most of us wouldn't try this, one man tried to pay his electricity bill with a picture of a spider. Click here to see the article and read the email exchange between him and the power company.....

Here is the rest.

I really like the integration in this blog post of an everyday life story with a powerful biblical truth - helps makes God's truth come alive!

"I Will Obey God Today!"

Here are some random notes from my message on Sunday – part 4 of the Super Six series“truths of steel.”

I can do life the “me-way” or “God’s way”

The “me-way”
There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.
Proverbs 14:12 (NIV)
“God’s way”
As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him.
Psalm 18:30 (NIV)

Ebay – Obey – God’s Way - it's my choice - I have a free-will.

Our obedience makes a difference.
There are benefits to obedience.

When I obey:
1. I go God’s way
2. I unlock understanding
3. I open the door to God’s favour
4. I make God smile
5. I worship God
6. I please God more that than doing what I think is a sacrifice
7. I open the door/release God’s breakthrough in my life

Blessings for Obedience

1 If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. 2 All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God: 3 You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country. 4 The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock--the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. 5 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed. 6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out..... (the rest of the chapter is well worth a good read)
Deut 28:1-6

You bless those who obey you, Lord; your love protects them like a shield.

Psalms 5:12 (TEV)

"Obedience is the currency of the Kingdom"

Here is a warning for disobedience (2 versions so we “get it!”)
Rebelling against God or disobeying him because you are proud is just as bad as worshiping idols or asking them for advice. You refused to do what God told you, so God has decided that you can't be king."

1 Samuel 15:23 (CEV)

Not doing what God tells you is far worse than fooling around in the occult. Getting self-important around God is far worse than making deals with your dead ancestors. Because you said No to God's command, he says No to your kingship.

1 Samuel 15:23 (MSG)

Obedient faith hears God’s Word.
Obedient faith acts on God’s Word.

There were some big chunks of stuff I did not say...like this

It’s possible to have God’s Word in our heads, but not to be sensitive to God’s Spirit to apply the Word in specific situations.
We hear, but we don’t hear.

It’s like living next to a four-lane freeway
We got so used to the noise that if we woke up on Sunday at 3 a.m., when there would be only one car every 15 or 20 seconds, it seemed strange to have it so quiet.
We “heard” the cars constantly, but we really didn’t hear them.
We blocked out the noise.

Spiritually we often do the same thing.
We develop the capacity to block out the Word from certain areas of our lives. We read it, or hear it preached, but we don’t really hear it.
Often we don’t want to hear it, because it reveals major changes that need to take place in our lives.
That’s why as Jesus taught He often said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear”; or, “take care how you listen” (Luke 8:8, 18).
Obedient faith hears God’s Word with a willingness to yield to the Lord in areas where we need to change.

A gray-haired old lady, long a member of her church, shook hands with the pastor after the Sunday morning service. “That was a wonderful sermon,” she told him, “just wonderful. Everything you said applies to someone I know.”

Obedient faith hears what God’s Word is saying to me, and it responds with appropriate action.

How do I obey God today?

1. Make a decision – “God, today I am placing my soul in Your hands”
2. Commit to building trust with God
3. Do it wholeheartedly

Education is a Global Currency - Rupert Murdoch

I really enjoyed this article from the Weekend Australian 22-23 November 2008.

Here is a start.......

IN the new economy, the people that companies are craving - and are willing to pay for - are people who add value to their enterprises. That means people with talent and skills and judgment.

Talent and skills and judgment are part of what economists call human capital. Human capital is a broad term. It includes formal skills; for example, a degree in computer science or the ability to speak a foreign language. But human capital is much more than this. It also includes things such as good work habits, the judgment that comes from experience, a sense of creativity, a curiosity about the world and the ability to think for oneself.

Free societies succeed because the people who have these skills are free to use them to advance themselves, their enterprises and society. It's true that some people manage to ..........

Iron People

This is a great life truth - and yes, it is found in God's Word.
I am sure many of you will have heard it before.....

As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.
Proverbs 27:17 (NIV)

My life has been truely enriched by people of strength - "Iron People."

I "spark" off people like this - and at times I may not even agree with them!!

We all need people to inspire us. People who are catalysts for change.
People who "spur us on" and initiate a new horizon.
Iron people who help us redefine the countours of parts of our mind and world.
Love it!!!

Here is the same biblical truth said in other ways (don't you just love the Word??!!)

You use steel to sharpen steel, and one friend sharpens another.
Proverbs 27:17 (MSG)

As iron sharpens iron, a friend sharpens a friend.
Proverbs 27:17 (NLT)

A friendly discussion is as stimulating as the sparks that fly when iron strikes iron.
Proverbs 27:17 (TLB)

People learn from one another, just as iron sharpens iron.
Proverbs 27:17 (TEV)

Just as iron sharpens iron, friends sharpen the minds of each other.
Proverbs 27:17 (CEV)

Who do you spark off?

Sequence

We have been playing this game as a family today. It is called Sequence.

Jethro and I lost again.... "but it was close!"

We got the game on our last holidays.

Ventura Games make it. Here is what they say about the game:

Easy enough for children, challenging for adults.

Play a card from your hand, place a chip on a corresponding space on the game board...when you have 5 in a row it's a Sequence.

Learn to block your opponents, remove their chips.

Watch out for the Jacks, They're wild.

With a little strategy and a little luck your a winner!

We've got the strategy bit OK - we just need a bit more luck!

The Howard Years - ABC TV

I am really looking forward to setting the HDD recorder tonight for part 1.
During his 11 years as Prime Minister, John Howard led his government through a decade of monumental upheaval. Throughout it all, he proved himself to be the ultimate political master. Now, The Howard Years goes behind the scenes to present the inside story of the Howard Government and examine the legacy of his time in office.

Almost one year to the day... more

The Race

Be inspired!!

The Race
by D. H. Groberg

Whenever I start to hang my head in front of failure’s face,
my downward fall is broken by the memory of a race.
A children’s race, young boys, young men;
how I remember well, excitement sure, but also fear, it wasn’t hard to tell.

They all lined up so full of hope, each thought to win that race or tie for first,
or if not that, at least take second place.
Their parents watched from off the side, each cheering for their son, and each boy hoped to show his folks that he would be the one.
The whistle blew and off they flew, like chariots of fire, to win, to be the hero there, was each young boy’s desire.
One boy in particular, whose dad was in the crowd, was running in the lead and thought “My dad will be so proud.”
But as he speeded down the field and crossed a shallow dip, the little boy who thought he’d win, lost his step and slipped.
Trying hard to catch himself, his arms flew everyplace, and midst the laughter of the crowd he fell flat on his face.
As he fell, his hope fell too; he couldn’t win it now.
Humiliated, he just wished to disappear somehow.
But as he fell his dad stood up and showed his anxious face, which to the boy so clearly said, “Get up and win that race!”
He quickly rose, no damage done, behind a bit that’s all, and ran with all his mind and might to make up for his fall.
So anxious to restore himself, to catch up and to win, his mind went faster than his legs.
He slipped and fell again.
He wished that he had quit before with only one disgrace.
“I’m hopeless as a runner now, I shouldn’t try to race.”

But through the laughing crowd he searched and found his father’s face with a steady look that said again, “Get up and win that race!”
So he jumped up to try again, ten yards behind the last.
“If I’m to gain those yards,” he thought, “I’ve got to run real fast!”
Exceeding everything he had, he regained eight, then ten...but trying hard to catch the lead, he slipped and fell again.
Defeat!
He lay there silently.
A tear dropped from his eye.
“There’s no sense running anymore!
Three strikes I’m out! Why try? I’ve lost, so what’s the use?” he thought.
“I’ll live with my disgrace.”
But then he thought about his dad, who soon he’d have to face.
“Get up,” an echo sounded low, “you haven’t lost at all, for all you have to do to win is rise each time you fall.
Get up!” the echo urged him on, “Get up and take your place! You were not meant for failure here!
Get up and win that race!”So, up he rose to run once more, refusing to forfeit, and he resolved that win or lose, at least he wouldn’t quit.
So far behind the others now, the most he’d ever been, still he gave it all he had and ran like he could win.
Three times he’d fallen stumbling, three times he rose again.
Too far behind to hope to win, he still ran to the end.
They cheered another boy who crossed the line and won first place, head high and proud and happy -- no falling, no disgrace.
But, when the fallen youngster crossed the line, in last place, the crowd gave him a greater cheer for finishing the race.
And even though he came in last with head bowed low, unproud, you would have thought he’d won the race, to listen to the crowd.
And to his dad he sadly said, “I didn’t do so well.”
“To me, you won,” his father said. “You rose each time you fell.”

And now when things seem dark and bleak and difficult to face, the memory of that little boy helps me in my own race.
For all of life is like that race, with ups and downs and all.
And all you have to do to win is rise each time you fall.
And when depression and despair shout loudly in my face,
another voice within me says, “Get up and win that race!”

"The best financial advice I can give..." (Lovejoy)

The team and I are doing a message soon about this current season of global financial tension.

In leading people at Westlife I have been guiding them with bits n pieces of wisdom from the Bible, common sense, research etc.

I came across this great blog post from Shaun Lovejoy (pastor Mountain Lake Church). He summaries some useful stuff very well. Here is a snippet.. over to you now, Shaun.

I believe far too many Christians and churches have overemphasized the idea of faith in regards to our budgeting and spending practices, at the neglect of exercising wisdom by practicing the Biblical principles given to us in black and white (and red and white) in the Bible!

For example, in the Bible God teaches us that we should:
1. Seek lots of counsel before making financial decisions.
2. Gain as much knowledge on a subject as possible!

Our Daily Recalibration

I recently read this great post from Tracy Skellern-Smith. It is a ripper!

Here is a start...

I was just watching an episode of Catalyst regarding our internal time-clocks... that's right, clocks, not clock.

We are told that inside our body, each of our organs and systems have their own timeclock. The liver, our hormones, our cells. All are on a daily routine based on their own timeclock.

Amazingly, the brain is the master timeclock. Every morning, as soon as our bodies see light, the master timeclock sends a signal to all the other timeclocks in our body - and it recalibrates them. All the clocks are, once more, in sync with the master clock and their own timings. .....

"Go West, Young Man!"

Here is a Michael W Smith clip that I referred to tonight - it is an "oldie" I know, but the lyrics are very powerful. Click here to view the lyrics.

The actual video clip on stage starts at about 1:03.

Here's a start on the lyrics ........

"I'm blazing a trail that leads to vice

So easily enticed

By darker means
When out of the wilderness of choice
I hear that one still voice
Call to me

Chorus:
Go west young man
Go west young man
When the evil go east
Go west young man
Go west young man
Find a heart that's golden

A Man Cold

We watched this great clip with the men tonight.

All the men think that this is just so true!!!

What do you think ladies?

Perry Noble "reshown"

Perry Noble was a "hit" recently at Hillsong Men's Conference.

Roderick did up this montage of some great Perryisms - and we watched it tonight with the blokes.

Nice one, Roderick - and Perry, "love your work!"

Go West!

I am really looking forward to Westlife Wednesday this fortnight. It is a men's-only night called "Go West!" Note - the girls had their own special night awhile ago - so now it's our turn!!
Gents, if you want to get the "heads-up" why not super-scan-read the whole book of Genesis - see if you can pick the thread!

A Great Neighbour and a Ladder

Today was the first Tuesday at the new HUB.
There were a bunch of people waiting there at about 9am.
Here is our "neighbour" Alan ... he met us with a date loaf for morning tea, and also offered his ladder to instal the wireless ADSL on the roof.
He even walked it with me from his home around the block to the HUB.

Nice one, Neighbour!
