Resignation Audio
It's been a very emotional season. And yesterday was no exception.
Pastor Steve Dixon from Hillsong Brisbane introduced our resignation section at the end of the Celebration. He was very generous about the launch, health and growth of Westlife Church.

Important News - We Have Resigned
Our last Sunday will be Sunday 11 October 2009.
Pastor Steve Dixon from Hillsong Brisbane Campus this morning addressed the church and outlined the launch, growth and health of the church. That was very honouring.
Jillian and I have been overwelmed by the love and gratitude that people have expressed. Thanks.
Here is a bit of what we said this morning:
This has been a very tough decision – probably the toughest decision we have made so far in our lives. Yet it is also a relatively simply one.
When your values are clear, decisions become clearer.
We value our family, marriage and health – we value our children.
So these important things always come first....
We have sought prayed and read God’s Word – we have spent time with wise counsel – we have spoken to key people – we have looked at a lot of options – we have searched our hearts
– and we have come to this very difficult decision.
Parts of this decision are very sad – extremely sad
This decision will be very sad, even hurtful to some of you – we apologise for that.
Our family, marriage and health have been under a relentless pressure – and there is a deep weariness. Another family holiday will not fix this. 3 months off will not fix this.
We believe that resigning as Founding and Lead Pastors is the best choice for our family and for the church.
We are confident of a strong God – who is the head of this Church. This strong God knew this decision was coming – and He is not surprised.
We are confident of the God at work in you – some of you will be shaken for a season –but that will turn into a kingdom resolve that will fuel the next level of health and growth at Westlife
We love you all – we have prayed for you in advance – we have some good people around us and our church - we have set some things in motion that will position you for a great new leader or leaders.
We are thankful for this opportunity and privilege to lead you – it is coming up 4 years for some of you. These have truly been the Wonder Years for us – the establishment of a vibrant local church in a growth corridor.
Thank you for the privilege of leading you and being your pastors.
The team are planning a Farewell Celebration for Sunday PM 11 October 2009 - probably at about 6pm.

Are You Getting the Point? - Dr Gary Chapman
So, how do we process conflicts without arguing? Most of us are far better at "making our point" than in "getting the point" of the other person.
Listening has to do with trying to look at the world through the other person's eyes. It's not that difficult if you try. Once you can truthfully say, "I think I understand what you are saying, and it makes sense." Then you can say, "Let me tell you how I'm thinking, and see if it makes sense to you."
Two people who listen long enough to affirm each other can then find a win-win solution.
Arguments reveal the heart. Almost always arguments grow out of unmet emotional needs. One wife said, "Little things like getting the old newspapers out to the garage for recycling is not a big deal to him, but it is to me because I hate clutter. It's kind of a visual thing." What is she saying? One of her emotional needs is to have order in the house. Clutter is emotionally upsetting to her.
The wise husband and wife will look for the emotional need behind the argument.
Why is my spouse so upset over what seems trivial to me? The answer to that question will help you understand your spouse. Meeting emotional needs for each other is one way to create a positive climate for communication.

We don’t have to be Oprah giving away new cars to positively change someone’s world.
We each have that same power.
We don’t even have to do anything!

Whether we have a long conversation with a friend or simply place an order at a restaurant, every word makes a difference. The results of our interactions are rarely neutral; they are almost always positive or negative.
Ask yourself, "Do my words reflect my commitment to helping others, creating win-wins, continuously learning, embracing change, supporting my team's success?"
Words are the seeds of commitment. We plant the seeds with each movement of our lips. Once they are spoken, our words either grow in the form of an immediate response or they take time to germinate. Whether the result becomes apparent sooner or later, we cannot speak words of failure and defeat and expect a life of success and victory.
Plant the seeds of success in someone’s mind and heart today.
You’ll start a positive ripple effect that can be felt by many people and many miles away, not to mention the positive effect you will feel inside.

Focus on Excuses or Focus on Solutions
Focus on solutions, and every challenge becomes a stepping stone.
During one of Franklin D. Roosevelt's election campaigns, his campaign manager was about to print 3 million copies of the candidate's acceptance speech with his photograph alongside. Then someone pointed out that the photographer had never given permission to use the photograph. According to the copyright laws at that time, you could be fined a dollar per copy for publishing unauthorized photographs. The campaign couldn't take a $3 million hit.
The campaign manager felt a tinge of panic, but instead of thinking up excuses or finding someone to blame, he kept his cool and started considering ways to handle the situation. Could this disaster be turned into a dividend?
He had an idea.
He cabled the photographer: "I have a plan that could mean a great deal of publicity for you. What's it worth to you if I use your photo on this campaign material?" The photographer cabled back: "I can't afford more than $250."
It was a deal!
By focusing on finding a solution, FDR's campaign manager was not only able to prevent great embarrassment and fines, but he also forged a lasting relationship between the photographer and FDR's administration—and he got a pretty good deal for a crucial photo.

Saturday Night LIVE - Dad's Edition - Sat 5 Sept 09
Change of Location - This Sunday AM - Excited and Concerned
We will be at the Woodcrest College Gym Hall (Nev Smith Drive, Springfield)
I am excited .... and also somewhat concerned.
I am excited about our special guest. It is a privilege to have someone of Peter Janetzki’s calibre. He will be inspiring. And he will be worth inviting someone to hear him.
I am excited about his content too - it will help families alot - and will help them build in healthy ways and generationally.
And I am excited that we get to bunk in with the crew from Oasis Church. I really appreciate their pastor, Brett Swann.
But I am also concerned - that some people
1. will not remember the change of location - and will turn up at the wrong spot – and at the wrong time – and late
2. will not invite people to hear a practical message from a great speaker
3. will not turn up because they think the content will not interest them – that they will have the Sunday off.
This has happened before when we have changed location.
So I am putting it out there.... excited... and concerned.
It will be a great morning. Hope I see you there.

Something About Sundays - Steve Penny
I am really enjoying his writing recently.
Here it goes......
Some things happen on Sundays that don’t take place any other day of the week.
I usually receive messages from friends who are also up very early preparing for a great day in church. I then wait to hear the sounds of the musicians starting to set up down in our auditorium.
And then soon the masses begin to arrive and the sounds of many people in one place can be heard. Church then begins and the praise and worship starts to lift and many people in one place now become one people with one heart.
I love preaching. I love what it does in people’s lives. God’s word changes us as we receive it in faith.
And then it is over and we leave as one people with one purpose for another week.
Without church on a weekend our weeks would not have a defining point. For me church is the beginning and launching pad for another week of great exploits. I love being all together in one place and waiting for the God moment to happen. There always is a God moment when His people gather. You just have to be looking for it.
Can’t wait for next Sunday for another God moment with the greatest people on earth.
Bring it on.

You’ve likely heard of TWITTER, the free internet text messaging tool that millions of people use to connect with each other on their cell phones and computers. I use it daily to keep in touch with pastors around the world.
For years, I declined to use Twitter thinking it was probably a frivolous waste of time. My staff tried to get me to start using it 3 years ago when it launched July ’06, but it seemed so narcissistic.
But recently, John Piper and I preached a funeral together and I saw John’s article on why he uses Twitter for ministry. I realized the powerful possibility of using this free tool to stay in contact with other pastors. Instead of answering the question, “What are you doing? (boring!) I use Twitter to encourage leaders and share what I’m thinking.
Connecting to each other through Twitter has several benefits:
1. You can share with me any immediate crisis or great celebration the moment it happens. It would be my privilege to “weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice.” Sharing your victories always doubles the joy. Sharing hurts halves the pain.
2. I can share with you my personal thoughts and insights on ministry throughout the day. I send these out to my friends several times a day.
3. I can alert you instantly about national and global events that have impact on our ministries the moment the news breaks.

Center Stage - New Westlife Kids Series - Mel Hunt
It's called Center Stage.
Here is a message from our Big K's leader, Mel Hunt. She is excited and so am I!!!
Do you want to learn to live a life of worship?
Starting this Sunday Westlife Kids will be doing that!
We will be following along on tour with world famous worship band Cloud9 as they teach an up and coming artist what worship is allabout.We will get an all-exclusive look at behind the scenes footage of the band as they crisscross the world to make God's Name famous!
The new Elevate Series, Center Stage, looks at eight aspects of worship that I’m sure will inspire your kids to live a life that is centered around God.
When we think about worship, we usually think of singing and that is usually at church in our Sunday celebrations. But that is not just the only aspect of worshiping our awesome God, which we will be learning about.
Westlife kids will be learning through great examples in the Bible, stunning visuals, interactive games and craft activities. These graphics are examples of the weekly posters we have displayed, which show our weekly main points.
We start the series learning the ultimate truth, that only God is worthy of our worship and praise. The Westlife Kids team is excited to be teaching this topic because we know, worshipping God is what we are created for and there is no better thing to do.
To see Westlife Kids as young as three worshipping God by dancing, singing, serving in our house, putting their pocket money in the collection, is inspirational.
Worship is an action that we do all day, everyday; a lifestyle. To be teaching that foundational truth to this new generation is a great privilege and honour.
Thank you for entrusting your kids to us, and know we love partnering with you in sharing the greatness of God.

Very interesting.
Satan called a worldwide convention of demons.
In his opening address he said,
"We can't keep Christians from going to church."
"We can't keep them from reading their Bibles and knowing the truth."
"We can't even keep them from forming an intimate relationship with their Saviour."
"Once they gain that connection with Jesus, our power over them is broken."
"So let them go to their churches; let them have their covered dish dinners, BUT steal their time, so they don't have time to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ.."
"This is what I want you to do," said the devil:
"Distract them from gaining hold of their Saviour and maintaining that vital connection throughout their day!"
"How shall we do this?" his demons shouted.
"Keep them busy in the non-essentials of life and invent innumerable schemes to occupy their minds," he answered.
"Tempt them to spend, spend, spend, and borrow, borrow, borrow."
"Persuade the wives to go to work for long hours and the husbands to work 6-7 days each week, 10-12 hours a day, so they can afford their empty lifestyles."
"Keep them from spending time with their children."
"As their families fragment, soon, their homes will offer no escape from the pressures of work!"
"Over-stimulate their minds so that they cannot hear that still, small voice."
"Entice them to play the radio or cassette player whenever they drive."

The demons went eagerly to their assignments causing Christians everywhere to get busier and more rushed, going here and there, having little time for their God or their families.
Having no time to tell others about the power of Jesus to change lives.
I guess the question is, has the devil been successful in his schemes?

Crossing the Witness Line - Steve Penny
One of the most fascinating scenes was the valley in which David fought the Philistine giant – Goliath. It was so interesting to see the size of the valley and the distance David had to run to actually engage the giant in battle.
Contrast this to earlier that day when David arrived at the battle scene, only to watch his brothers and Sauls’s army flee from the fight whenever Goliath roared in defiance.
I have been very challenged of late in regard to giving in – on the witness front.
I can identify with David’s brothers who had been in the battle fray for some time. They knew the strength of opposition and the defiant nature of the brutal giant opposing them.
In other words they had been intimidated by their enemy.
David was not concerned about protecting his reputation or his standing in the community. He knew that the armies of God were being challenged and that this position had to be reversed.
Sometimes when the situation regarding your witness seems to be going against you – it is time to raise the stakes and cross the line and go on all out attack.
In the book I read – God wins, and so I suggest we raise the stakes and start to run toward some of these arrogant opposers who so easily belittle our Christian faith. Not in an angry or violent physical manner but with the most lethal of all spiritual weapons – the love of God.
There is no force created that can withstand the power of God’s love. Go for it. Invade someone’s space with unqualified love and watch them melt before the presence of God. Talk to them with genuine God kind of love – and it will stop them in their tracks – like a stone to the forehead.
However in order to get close enough to unleash God’s love, you must boldly cross the witness line to engage those still lost on the battlefront of life.

I used a firehose and "Max" to demonstrateHoly Spirit baptism and fullness as follows:
The initial baptism in Holy Spirit is once-for-all experience that never needs to be repeated. But drinking from the river of the Spirit that now flows from within is something that each believer needs to do regularly.
For this reason Paul uses a continuing tense when he says: “Be [continually] filled [and refilled] with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18).

We each have the power to create a positive ripple, effecting many people many miles away. We can change the world of those around us. This also creates a powerful ripple effect inside each of us – it feels good!

10 Blog Tips - Mark Batterson

In quantitative terms, blogging is the most important thing I do. I view it as a form of digital discipleship. Not a substitute for one-on-one. But a great supplement.
As NCC grows larger, I feel like it's a way that our congregation can know what is going on in my head and my heart at any given moment. Twitter takes that to another level by the way!
Blogging came pretty naturally to me because I've always kept a journal. But over the years I've learned a few do's and don'ts.
Here are ten of them.
I view them as my personal guidelines for blogging.
1) Stay Positive - Life is too short and the Kingdom Cause is too important for the sideways energy of negativity! In my opinion, too many blogs try to stir up controversy. And it's almost always someone who has a very small readership. A blog is not a license to go negative or take potshots.
2) Include Hyperlinks - Remember the fear that technology would turn us into nameless, faceless autobots? That it would kill community. Again, it's no replacement for face-to-face. But I think it's had the exact opposite effect. It brings people together in amazing ways. And one way that happens is by linking to one another.
3) Keep it Short and Sweet - It's a blog not a book!
4) Don't let commentors hijack your blog - Here is a personal rule of thumb. When people post comments I try to discern the spirit behind the comment. If I feel like someone is trying to bait me or hijack my blog then I resist the temptation to go there. Here's one lesson learned. If someone's comment is longer than your post they might have an agenda! I do think it's healthy to engage in respectful debate. But don't let it cross the line.
5) Tell Your Wife About It Before You Blog About It - Guess how I learned this lesson? If your family has to read your blog to know what is going on in your life something is wrong! One critical decision you have to make is how transparent you're going to be. I try to be emotionally, spiritually, and intellectually transparent. But I do have boundaries. For example, I don't post pictures of my kids.
6) If You Wouldn't Say it to Their Face Don't Blog It - Again, I think we need civility and respect. I think there are ways to rebuke, exhort, and correct via blog. But do it in a gracious and redeeming way. Here's the problem. That takes far more work! Meanness is laziness. Tactfulness is hard work.
7) Know Your Audience - Would you blog if no one read it? I think that's a good litmus test. Obviously, if you are blogging you are doing it so people can read it. But I primarily blog for myself--it's my journal. It's the way I keep track of what God is doing in my life. But you also have to be cognizant of your audience. I have two primary audiences: pastors and NCCers. From a numbers standpoint, pastors are my primary audience. From a personal standpoint, NCC is my primary audience. I also know their is a growing audience amongst those who have read one of my books.
8) Be Yourself - A blog ought to be as unique as you are. It takes a while to find your voice. But don't worry if it's different. Different is good. I ought to be able to figure out your personality type by reading a month of entries!
9) Find Your Rhythm - Part of blogging is finding a way for it to fit your lifestyle. I think it's critical that you be consistent. Consistency is key! But don't revolve your life around your blog. Your blog needs to revolve around you! By the way, I used to think that my blog supplemented my sermons. Not so sure. Now I wonder if my sermons supplement my blog.
10) Stay Positive - I know. I know. I listed it twice!

Why I Blog - Mark Batterson
I was was asked 2 months ago to do the same to a different group of pastors.
I like blogging.
And was really inspired by a great blogging pastor - Mark Batterson (National Community Church, Washington DC).

I thought I would hit the pause button and share the top ten reasons why I blog:
1) I want to be a good steward of God ideas. My blog is one way I "take my thoughts captive"--II Corinthians 10:5.
2) Too often we remember what we should forget and forget what we should remember. My blog helps me remember what God doesn't want me to forget.
3) Blogging is therapeutic. It helps me process thoughts and emotions.
4) Habakkuk 2:2 says, "Write down the revelation." Blogging is one way I write down what God is revealing to me.
5) Blogging is a form of digital discipleship. I can't disciple a thousand people one-on-one or face-to-face. Blogging is asyncronous discipleship. It's e-vangelism.
6) Blogging is marking my trail with breadcrumbs like Hansel and Gretel. Jeremiah 31:21 says, "Set up road signs; put up guideposts. Mark well the path by which you came."
7) I blog for posterity. My grandkids will know what I was doing and thinking on February 11, 2006. They'll be able to know my heart and read my mind.
8) Blogging is a form of autobiography. It helps me understand God's storyline for my life.
9) Blogging makes NCC an open-source church. For better or for worse, my blog is the way I share what we're doing at NCC.
10) I enjoy blogging. I don't think it comes natural to everyone. But I've always journaling. Blogging fits the rhythm of my life and ministry.

New L.I.F.T. Series = Re-enACTS series 2.0
I am linking this series to our previous Re-enACTS series in March 2009.

It's time to do it all over again - and grow in fruitfulness and daily live in power.
The initial baptism in Holy Spirit is once-for-all experience that never needs to be repeated. But drinking from the river of the Spirit that now flows from within is something that each believer needs to do regularly.
For this reason Paul uses a continuing tense when he says:
“Be [continually] filled [and refilled] with the Spirit” - Ephesians 5:18.
